How do I get a googlemail (gmail) account?

If you do not have a googlemail (gmail) account you will have to sign up for one, if you wish to edit the shared documents. Unfortunately you can't just go to google and signup (google do this to avoid spam) you need to be invited by an existing member. People who have a google account can invite others; if you need an invitation please email us.

Why do we need a google account?

The Optical Proteomics website was designed so that the members can easily edit all the relevant documents (provided they are given permission to do so). However you will need a google account in order to edit the Documents which are published on the website. At the bottom of most pages you will see this.

I already have a googlemail (gmail) account, what now?

In order for you to edit the selected documents you will need to email us your gmail username and we will give you permission to edit the pages on the website. Once we give you permission login to your google account and click on the Docs & Spreadsheets tab. As you can see all the relevant documents which are on the website have been added to your account.

This is the real power of sharing. Now you can create a document (grant, paper...) and add collaborators.

How do I edit/add/publish/add collaborators to the shared documents?

In the main page of the Google Docs & Spreadsheets you will see the list of all documents that you have permission to. As you can see each document has an Owner (in this case Opticalproteomics), Collaborators (all of us) and you can also put Viewers. As the owner you can add other collaborators, as a collaborator you can edit the document.

Once you have introduced the necessary changes to the document don't forget to save. To add collaborators to your document press the Collaborate tab.

If you want your document to be public hit the Publish tab.

Once the document has been published it has an http address associated to it. This document can be viewed from any browser. For any documents already online, you will need to click 'Re-publish document' to update the changes.

As you can clearly see this is a very powerful tool which can save you a lot of time when writing joint papers,grants... you can also add notes, revisions, the lot.

What is the difference between the Google documents that we are sharing and the personal webspace?

The Optical Proteomics Network website and personal webspace is hosted on a dedicated commercial server by 1&1. The Network is the owner of the computer and we have complete access to all files on the server. All Google documents within the website are stored on the Google servers.

How do I access (FTP) my personal webspace?

There are several ways to connect to the server using a FTP client. Theses are the basic settings

Please note that although you are accessing http://www.opticalproteomics.org/ you are being redirected to your personal webspace which is actually stored in http://www.opticalproteomics.org/~yourusername

host: www.opticalproteomics.org

username: Your username is the username we have on our database for your email address without any special characters (.,_,-...), i.e. if the email we have in our database is joe.bloggs@... then your username is joebloggs.

password: if you do not know your password please email us; remember that you can't change your own passwords only we can, so if you want us to setup a specific password let us know.

If you type ftp://www.opticalproteomics.org/ on the address bar of any browser, you will get a prompt asking you for your username and password. After entering them you can see the file tree of your webspace. The problem is on most browsers you will only be able to see this file tree, this effectively means that if you want to add/delete/rename a file you need a special FTP client software. There are a number of FTP client software which you can use

FireFTP - If you are using Firefox as your web browser you can download this to use with your browser. Download FireFTP (Don't forget to allow FTP to install the software) >> Press Install Now >> Restart Firefox >> Tools >> Add-ons >> choose the extension tab >> Install it >> done. Once its working open FireFTP , Tools >> FireFTP >> Manage Accounts >> New >> Account name is whatever you want (e.g. optical proteomics); Host, Username and Password you already have.

Other Free FTP clients include: SmartFTP, Filezilla... For a comprehensive list of all FTP clients go here
